The 2008 growing season was exceptional in Portugal and particularly in the Alentejo – the area occupying the middle one third of Portugal renowned for its agriculture and an increasingly important area for quality wines.

For 2008 we asked Xu Bing to create the label. Xu Bing is one of China’s foremost and innovative artists and invented “New English Calligraphy”. At first sight the label appears to be Chinese characters but on closer examination it can be seen that English letters are stylistically arranged to spell out the words “Howard’s” and “Folly”.

Grape Varieties

  • 90% Syrah, 10% Alicante Bouschet

Aging/Finishing

  • No fining or cold stabilisation. Blended and bottled in March 2009

Wine Analysis

  • Alcohol: 14,3%
  • Total acidity: (6.7g/l) (Ac.Tart.)
  • Volatile acidity 0.55 (g/l) (Ac.Acet.) pH: 3.53

Tasting Notes

  • Deep, dark red garnet colour, almost opaque. Complex heady mix of dark berry and plum fruits, some tarry, earthy, gamey notes. Full rich creamy palate with focused and dense fruit. Spicy vanillan and mocha notes. Great balance, structure, and length.

Serving Suggestion

  • Decant 60 minutes prior to serving with Roast meats (especially Beef and of course Yorkshire pudding!), hearty stews and soft blue cheeses.
