Wine tasting at The Folly

September 29, 2020

Alentejo based winery Howard’s Folly has opened its doors to visitors, curious to discover the process of winemaking and to taste Australian award-winning winemaker David Baverstock’s new fine wines.

Opened in October 2018, the only winery located within the city walls of Estremoz – just a few steps from the main square -, Howard’s Folly has created a selection of experiences that offer a glimpse into the daily life of a winery. Their aim is to share their knowledge, expertise, and modern views on winemaking in a fun and interactive way.

The tours start at 15€ with a walk through their state of the art winery – with graffiti-covered walls, contemporary art pieces, and large stainless steel tanks sitting on a polished concrete floor -, the beautiful glass-paneled barrel room, and a tasting of the three Sonhador wines: white, rosé and red, in the bar.

There is also a vertical red wine tasting (25€), comparing five different Sonhador red vintages, and a tasting of Howard’s Folly white wines (20€) from the Alentejo and the Monção and Melgaço region, known for its Alvarinho varietal wines.

Those who are looking for a more in-depth experience can choose the Reserva and Premium tour and tasting (50€). This option gives participants the opportunity to taste wines directly form the tanks and barrels, learn about the different stages of maturation, and discover each grape variety used in the making of the Howard’s Folly wines, followed by a tasting of the Reserva and Limited Edition wines.

On top of the tours and tastings, David Baverstock has also created a unique experience: a Winemaking Workshop (100€). This exercise will teach oenophiles about the characteristics of Howard’s Folly’s base wines, which participants will then use to create their very own blend.

The tastings take place in the comfort The Folly restaurant’s bar and can be accompanied by a deli board – a selection of some of the region’s best artisan cheeses, charcuteries, olives, and bread -, or snacks from the restaurant’s menu. After the tasting, all participants get a 10% discount on wine bought in the winery shop.

And because creativity is key at Howard’s Folly, the team also can tailor the tours and tasting to your liking. They can even take you to their vineyards in Portalegre, where their viticulturist will take you through the process of growing grapes, followed by a wine tasting and a picnic among the old vines, while you enjoy the magnificent views of the Serra de São Mamede.
